Sika Deer (Cervus Nippon)

Personally Aaron’s (Hunting Downunder owner & guide) favourite of all deer species to hunt, Sika Stags are arguable the most cunning and provide the biggest challenge to hunt.

Sika Stag Hunting is a hunting experience found only in the central part of the North Island of New Zealand, Sika deer were introduces in the early 1900’s a short distance (as the crow flies) from Hunting Downunders back door.

A very vocal deer all year round (both hinds and stags), the stags are especially vocal over their rut period – late March through May, and emit 2 distinct types of “roars” – not to unlike that of Elk.
